Week one of the 2021 Colorado high school boys wrestling season had just duals / tri / quads as this is a shorten wrestling season with no individual tournaments.
InsideCoWrestling and Cliff Keen Athletic are proud to sponsor this weekly award for the season. Cliff Keen’s commitment to wrestling nation-wide has gone back over 60 years and their support as the sponsor of Colorado High School Boys “Wrestler of the Week “is greatly appreciated. Please check out their website for all your wrestling needs at www.cliffkeen.com
This week, four nominees were sent to our committee members and voted upon by their record / results for the week with consideration for the competition that they have wrestled. The task to narrow it down to one choice is not an easy decision to make and it is one that is not taken lightly by the committee members.
The nominees for the first week of Colorado High School Boys “Wrestler of the Week” are Tyler Collins, Wray 152lbs senior, Remington Peterson, Rye 182 lbs Junior, Levi Martin, Mancos 113 lbs Freshman, Brady Collins, Wray 120 lbs Sophomore
It is with great honor that sponsor Cliff Keen Athletic and InsideCoWrestling present the Colorado High School “Wrestler of the Week” for week one to Remington Peterson of Rye HS who is ranked #5 in 2A. (ranking is by ‘On the Mat)
Remington Peterson accomplishment for the week was going 9 – 0 in the dual meets. Peterson would beat the #1 / 2A, the #3 / 3A, the #4 / 3A and the #6 / 2A wrestlers along the way of being undefeated on week one of the season.

The winner not only get recognized for his accomplishment but is given a custom gear bag from sponsor Cliff Keen.
SPECTATORS & CLEANING & ZOOM, OH MY!
#1 OTM RANKED, SARAH SAVIDGE, SMILES AFTER HER WIN BY FALL
By E.J. Everard, ICW Staff
“Loved the Zoom! It was awesome getting to watch the girls.” - Dacia Coddington
The Vista Ridge High School Athletic Director, Mr. Monson, was dedicated to offering an in person spectator option for the first wrestling event of the 2021 season on January 28. After multiple meetings and phone calls, the protocols were defined and gate pass lists printed. Vista Ridge offered the NFHS Network live feed, as well as a live Zoom meeting. Parents asked to position the camera so the scoreboard and time could be seen, as well as to announce wrestlers before each match. We also had to mute all guests. On Saturday, January 30th, the boys and girls were competing at different locations. Since spectators were not allowed at either location, we had to problem solve in real time since our Zoom account did not allow concurrent meetings. Families connected the live stream to their television at home or watched from their phone, because they had to work or care for others. One family even setup at a nearby Village Inn to watch virtually, since they drove their wrestler. We coordinated for a parent to run the boys Zoom session and record matches. He began to commentate throughout each match and received rave reviews. The general consensus after a week of competition is that everything inside the 28 foot circle will continue to be what we love about the sport, regardless of the differences outside of it.
After completing two pilot seasons, Girls Wrestling is here to stay in Colorado! Both Girls and Boys Wrestling follow the same National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules, to include weigh-ins while wearing the singlet.
THE 2021 PANDEMIC SEASON BEGINS

By E.J. Everard, ICW Staff
Vista Ridge hosted Doherty Girls and Boys on Thursday, January 28, 2021
Colorado wrestlers were able to complete their 2019-2020 Season prior to the global pandemic. However, the 2020-2021 Season would require concessions and without the sound of a whistle, the Vista Ridge and Doherty girls wrestling teams started the season for both high schools. This is the first CHSAA formally sanctioned girls wrestling season and these schools boast two of the largest girls programs in the State. Six of the ten girls varsity weight classes were contested. Only the 100 lbs bout would go the distance, with Doherty’s #5 ranked Candice Brickell edging out Vista Ridge’s Cheyenne Dyess, also a returning state qualifier, with two takedowns and a 4-0 final score. Doherty’s Girls Coach, Eric Metcalf, said “This season has been a game changer, but I was glad to see it’s not changed the drive to succeed and become better wrestlers.” Doherty and Vista Ridge girls will meet again this Saturday Feb 6th during a quad meet with #1 ranked Chatfield and Mesa Ridge.
With the 2021 season not allowing tournaments within the State of Colorado and wrestlers limited to only 20 matches, Athletic Directors and Coaches model healthy resiliency skills by focusing on what they can control and accepting what they can not. Vista Ridge’s periodization plan limits weigh-ins per week, while emphasizing a recipe of nutrition, recovery, sleep, and mindset exercises.

2021 Colorado Girls High School Preseason Ranking
The wrestling season is just beginning with a later start date then normal and also a shorten high school season, with duals only for both the girls and boys in Colorado. This the first year of being a CHSAA sanctioned high school sport for girls has been a long time coming. The road has been a long one that started four years ago with the coaches hosting girls only tournament events and the state championship until CHSAA approved to a two year probation and finally sanction of the sport. The growth of the girls teams and individual wrestlers has just about double each year since the start of the high school coaches pushing for the girls only division. Last year number had over 90 high school represented at the district tournaments and the number of girls was around 325. At a quick glance this year the team numbers are down to around 55 high school teams and the individuals numbers could also be done , mostly because of covid19. with this the girls competing shall still get the recognization that they desire. InsideCoWrestling is proud to host the ranking for the girls individual and girls teams ranking for 2021 - 2022 season.

POWA takes Tyrant Duals by storm

By Tom Blair, ICW staff
What do you call a club that goes 16 – 0 in the Tyrant Duals on Jan 9th and 10th, you call them team POWA. While both the middle school and the elementary teams went undefeated - which is no small task at a national level tournament, POWA would only lose a total of 16 matches on the weekend. The middle school only had 14 losses and the elementary only lost 2 matches by a total of 9 points.
POWA out of Pueblo, Colorado brought two teams to the Tyrant Duals in Myrtle Beach, Sc. One in the middle school division (16 weight classes) and one in the elementary division (16 weight classes). The middle school team was placed in the National Division, with the tournament having two divisions and 9 teams in each for a total of 18 teams. Each team wrestled 8 duals in the two-day tournament. POWA went undefeated with a record of 8 – 0 while winning the National Division.
