Meloneers look to roll competition in Class 2A wrestling tournament09 Feb 2017
Rocky Ford High School is looking to do more at the Class 2A Region 4 tournament Friday and Saturday at Colorado State University-Pueblo.The Meloneers, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, enter the tournament at Massari Arena seeking their fourth straight regional championship — which would go a long way toward making a run at a second Class 2A state championship in three years when they hit the Pepsi Center next week.
The Meloneers are ranked ahead of Meeker, which won the state title by one point in a thrilling showdown last year, and No. 3 Hotchkiss, which will tangle with the Cowboys at the 2A Region 1 meet Friday and Saturday in Hayden.“The team title will take care of itself if the kids go out and wrestle to their potential,” Rocky Ford coach Mike Jurney said. “It’s crucial that we get a good representation (to state) with the highest possible seeds to keep pace with the powerhouse western slope. We just have to do more.”Rocky Ford is led by two-time state champion Jacob Rodriguez at 106 pounds as well as returning state runner-up Greg Garcia at heavyweight.
Also in small-school regional action this week are Dolores Huerta and Rye, which will both be at the Class 2A Region 2 meet at Custer County High School. The Region 2 tournament also features seventh-ranked John Mall, led by two-time state champion Jonathan Andreatta at 126 pounds. Brandon Cruz of DHPH also is ranked at 126 pounds (No. 9) and will seek one of the four state qualifying spots at that weight.Rye’s Kyle Shaffer is among the regional contenders at 138 pounds, while Derick Samuelson is one of three ranked heavyweights in the region.
