With the holidays over and schools back in session, wrestling dual meets and tournaments have taken over the evenings and Saturdays around Colorado. Tonight crosstown rivals were doing battle in Loveland as Mountain View hosted Thompson Valley. This meet would also decide bragging rights for the high schools in Loveland.
Mountain View would start the dual down 12 points as they would be forfeiting two weight classes during the course of the meet. The meet started off at the 120 pound class with Jay McLaughlin, TV pinning Zak Neal, MV in the first period. 126 lbs was won by Vlad Kazakov, TV via forfeit. The next match was a pair of ranked wrestlers, #4 Zach Kennison, TV against # 6 Brad Perkins, MV at 132 lbs. With the match tied 2 - 2 going into the third period Kennison chose the defensive position, with less than a minute to go into the period he got a reverse and put Perkins on his back to secure a 3 point near fall. Bringing the final match score to a 7 - 2 decision.
Sophomore Brayden Besse, TV made short work of his opponent with a fall in 1:16 in the 138 lb class. In the 145 lbs Eric Contreras, MV top ranked wrestler (#5 - 4A) won by a 5 -2 decision over Johnathan Walker after being down 2 -0 after the first period. It was his consist attack in the neutral position that paid off in the end. Mt View Jacckson Gilbert at 152 lbs wrestled Isreal Catano, TV to a 4 -1 first period score with two takedowns. Early in the second period Catano score a takedown that put Gilbert straight to his back but then lost control and was reversed and got pinned.
At 160 lbs Semaj Spencer, MV none stop action paid off with a pin in the second period over Jaiden Perry. Thompson Valley Parker Simington the regular starter at 160 moved up to 170 lbs in a move to face Mtn View Braden Barker in what was viewed as a star match of the night. Well in a surprise move Coach Scott Barker forfeited that weight class and moved his son up to 182 lbs to face Chris Ringus, TV instead. This move was to help gain points on a close meet score as Braden Barker pinned his opponent in the second period bringing the team score to 21 - 27 with Thompson Valley in a slight lead.
Tim Lenhart, MV took on Patton Graff, TV at 195 lbs, Lenhart took a commanding lead going into the third (13 - 5). Both wrestlers started in the neutral position with Lenhart seeming to getting tried and Graff getting his second wind. Graff used an upper body throw (over / under) to throw Lenhart to the mat right to his back and secure a fall and also turned the tide of the meet. Thompson Valley would win the next four matches in a row, three by fall (Jordan Gonzales - 220, Kasey Gault - 106 & Hunter Williams - 113) to win the dual meet 48 - 27. With this win and the 49 - 27 win over Loveland back in December gives Thompson Valley the town title and bragging rights for the school year.
