Old Chicago NCCT Day one

After day one of the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament at the Bud Center in Loveland the team standing has Pueblo County in the lead with by five points over Pine Creek - 100.5 to 95.5 points. The other top spots belong to Brighton 90 pts, Legacy 88.5 pts and Greeley Central 86 pts.

Pueblo County still has 10 wrestlers out of the 13 entries in the tournament, eight of these wrestler are in the quarterfinals. But are without wrestler Chris Sandoval at 138 lbs as he was unable to attend because of medical reasons.  Second place Pine Creek also have 10 wrestlers still in competition with five in the quarterfinals and five in the consi -quarter finals. While third place Legacy follows with six wrestlers in the quarterfinals and two in the consi-quarterfinals.

With three rounds in the championship and consolation sides of the 14 weight classes’ brackets are in the books / computer we are down to 16 wrestlers per bracket. The ten mats on the arena floor have seen plenty of action with 820 matches on the day.  The full brackets and results can been found on trackwrestling.com

But let’s take a look at each bracket with a quick review of any upset or surprises. The top 12 to 16 wrestlers were seeded into each bracket with the rest bind drawled at random.

At  106 lbs non seeded Jaron Martinez, Brighton beat #9 seed Jesse Martinez, Dumas via major decision 11 - 3, then decision Tanner Hunt 6 -2 to put himself in the quarterfinals.

113 lbs -Unseeded  Hunter Williams, Thompson Valley pinned #3 seed Zach Mcinerney, Cheyenne Central then pinned his next opponent  Payton Dechant, Prairie View to reach the quarters.

120 lbs - there were no major surprises going into the quarters.

126 lbs - # 10 seed Isaac Dinette, Lakewood dec # 7 seed Idris Elias, Laramie,Wyo  3 -2 to advance to the quarters .

132 lbs - Unseeded junior Adrian Rodriguez, Platte Valley tech fall 16 - 0 # 7 seed Patrick Esparsen, Centauri and then decision #10 seed David Opheim , ThunderRidge while making it to the quarterfinals. The # 2 seed Matt Bailey, Berthoud lost via 13 - 9 decision to Jakob Otto, Cherry Creek in the second round.

138 lbs - # 5 seed Adam Aguilar, Legend lost in the second round to open the door for unseeded Cameron Maccommons, Coronado to advance to the quarters with a win in the third round.

145 lbs - One of the biggest upset saw # 1 seed Alika Kealoha, Thornton loss by fall to unseeded Jonas Lutz, Brighton. Lutz lost in the next round to another unseeded wrestler Bryson Fogg, Highland which put Fogg into the quarters.

152 lbs - Luke White, Cheyenne Mtn who is unseeded beat the #6 Rusty Lohr, Eaton and the #11 Devin Roettger, Mesa Ridge seeds to stay in the championship side of the bracket and into the quarters.

160 lbs - No major surprises

170 lbs - Idan Peek, Pine Creek decision #6 seed Andrue Rojas, Greeley Central and tech fall #11 seed Micah Strahan, Legend to put himself in the quarterfinals.

182 lbs - In this bracket there are two unseeded wrestlers Schyler James, Discover Canyon and Ryan Curnow, Mrn Range wrestled their way to the quarterfinals. James  beat #5 Joe Baca, Cheyenne Central and #12 Oscar Lopez, Jefferson while Curnow beat Zach Ogg, Poudre and Tyler Beck, ThunderRidge.

195 - lbs #2 seed Bryce Lundberg, Cheyenne Central was pinned in the first round of the tournament by unseeded Caleb Measner, University for the 2nd major upset of the day.

220 lbs - unseeded Tanner Aitken, Brighton pinned #7 Connor Balliet, Berthoud in 51 seconds .

285 - no major upsets

Wrestling starts at 9am with the quarters in both the championship and consolation sides of the brackets.
