Indian Invitational

12 Jan 2016

By Melanie Johnson - ICW staff

There was plenty of wrestling going on across the Western Slope this weekend including the Indian Invitational hosted by the Montrose Indians. There were 16 teams in attendance and some very close matches in all weight classes across the board. Before the day was over, Berthoud would end up sending 7 of their wrestlers into the finals for 1st & 2nd and another 3 wrestlers for 3rd and 4th, putting them in a great position to win the overall team award. It was no surprise that Senior  Bo Pipher (145 lbs) of Paonia with a record of 20 -0 would breeze through the tournament with a pin in 1:33 over Chance Charlesworth of Palisade to finish the tournament with a first place win and one of two Outstanding Wrestler awards. Senior Kyler Bailey(138 lbs) of Berthoud would see a tough match against Senior Dylan Wood of Ralston valley. Bailey with a record of 17-5 would battle all three periods in what would be a very tough loss to Wood who had an 18-2 record going in to this tournament finals and with a decision 6-4 would finish the tournament 19-2. Senior Jimmy Fate(160 lbs) of Berthoud would meet up with Sophmore Terrance Williams of Palisade in a match that went all three periods with Fate putting up some strong defense against this young wrestler, Fate would  get the win with a major decision of 16-7. Fate also was the recipient of  The Outstanding Wrestler award in the upper weights. Senior Chad Ellis (195 lbs) of Berthoud would get the chance to see Senior Chayden Harris of Olathe in the finals after Ellis saw a disappointing loss the night before to Harris at the Berthoud-Olathe dual. Ellis came out on top in the finals with a 13-4 decision against Harris. Berthoud finished with a  team score of 215.00 points to take home the Team award followed by Olathe with 168 pts and in third place, Paonia with 150 points.
