THE WEEKEND AHEAD
Colorado School of Mines puts its 3-0 dual record on the line as it visits Chadron State on Thursday and the Midwest Duals on Saturday. Chadron is 1-1 as the two meet in Mines' RMAC opener; at Midwest Duals in Kearney, Neb., Mines will face Newman (0-0), Central Missouri (2-5), and RMAC affiliate San Francisco State (2-2).
HASTINGS CUSATIS OPEN RECAP
Mines dominated the 2018 Hastings Cusatis Open, winning three classes with 13 placewinners overall to open up the second half of the season last Saturday. Taylor Gambill (141), Keenan Willits (165), and TJ Shelton (174) won their weight classes to lead the field, while Noah Au-Yeung and Weston Hunt were runners up at 133 and 285, respectively. As a team Mines had the most team points (627) and pins (20) in the field.
LAST YEAR VS. CHADRON
The Orediggers will look to avenge a 25-15 loss to the Eagles from last season with half of the lineup changed from that dual. Ethan Ruby and Keenan Willits won their matches, including a tech fall for Willits, but Chadron ended with five straight wins to overcome an early Mines lead. Mines has not won against Chadron since the 2010-11 season, and have not won against them on the road since 2009-10.
LAST YEAR AT THE MIDWEST DUALS
Mines will face two of the three teams it battled at last year's Midwest Duals as they meet Central Missouri and San Francisco State again. Mines dropped a close 25-19 decision to Central Missouri and fell 22-15 to SFSU; they ended by beating University of Mary 24-12.
IN THE RANKINGS
Mines received votes in the most recent NWCA Top 25 poll from December, their first time receiving votes this season. Keenan Willits debuted as #10 in the nation at 165 pounds on the back of a 10-1 start that has seen him go unbeaten against NCAA Division II competition with nine bonus-point wins out of 10 victories.
YOUNG GUNS
Mines' success has been helped by a number of newcomers this season, as five freshmen have worked their way into the lineup with four of them sporting double-digit wins in the first half. At 141, Taylor Gambill is 11-4 coming off a win at Hastings and a second-place finish at Wyoming; Noah Ottum is 12-3 at 149 pounds including 3-0 in duals. At 174, TJ Shelton has been nothing short of dominant going 6-0 with four falls and 15 dual points, while Connor Ventura is 10-3 at 184 including 1-0 in duals. True freshman Weston Hunt is 15-2 at 285 pounds in his rookie season, leading Mines in pins (6) and generating 11 bonus-point wins so far.
