Mavericks Fall to Cowboys13 Feb 2017

The Colorado Mesa wrestling team closed out their dual season this evening with a 20-16 loss to the visiting New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in Brownson Arena. The Cowboys won six of the ten matches including two for bonus points while Colorado Mesa picked up a pair of bonus point victories at 141 and 174 pounds respectively.
After New Mexico Highlands won the opening two bouts, the Mavericks earned a technical fall win by Brett Kasprzyk at 141 pounds. Kasprzyk defeated Patrick Vega 20-2 after settling for a 2-1 lead after the first period. The Mesa, Ariz. native earned three four-point nearfalls in the second period to extend his lead.
157-pound reserve John Daniel picked up an impressive win, defeating Reis Humphrey 3-1. Humphrey placed third at last weekend's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. Junior Bruno Nicoletti picked up the Mavericks other bonus point win at 174 pounds with a 19-2 technical fall win over Kenneth Yara.
The Mavericks final victory came at 285 pounds where freshman Clayton Voytilla earned a 5-1 win over Gabe Escobedo. That was the second win in a row for Voytilla over Escobedo.
Colorado Mesa will be back in action at the NCAA Super Region 4 Tournament in Golden on February 24.
