GOLDEN, Colo. – Five Northern Colorado redshirt wrestlers placed at the 2017 Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open this past Sunday at Colorado School of Mines. Having not wrestled in an open since 2016, the freshmen Bears came out of hibernation to make some noise. Northern Colorado sent six unattached wrestlers, and placed five.
 Michael Johnson,  Macoy Flanagan,  Seth Bogulski, and  Robert Winters Jr., all reached the finals, with Johnson being the lone champion for the Bears.  Zachary Martinez made the consolation finals, but dropped the consolation bout placing 4th.
Johnson won his first round match via fall in 6:59, and won his semifinals bout by decision 6-0. In the finals, Johnson grinded out a 3-2 victory over Aaron Anguiano of Western State. Johnson is 14-8 as a redshirt this season, with this being the first and only tournament title he has captured thus far. Flanagan also won two matches en route to the finals. With a 15-2 major decision, and a 3-1 overtime victory, Flanagan reached the finals at 165 lbs. Flanagan dropped the championship match by a score of 3-0 to Ricky Padilla of Air Force. Flanagan is 8-7 on the year, with this being the first tournament he has placed in. Seth Bogulski won three matches before reaching the finals at 174 lbs. Bogulski won his first round 14-8, and won his quarterfinals match in dramatic fashion, with a 5-3 overtime victory. In the semifinals, Bogulski won via decision 9-5, and dropped the finals match 9-5 to Noah Irons of Air Force. Bogulski is 8-6 on the year, with this being his first tournament place.
The final Bear to reach the finals was Heavyweight Robert Winters Jr. Winters. The freshman Heavyweight won two matches via fall in 3:16 and 2:57, and a 3-2 decision on his way to the finals. Winters ultimately dropped the finals match by way of the pin in 3:28 to Aaron Karns, who was wrestling unattached. Winters' sports a 9-4 record on the year, and also placed second at the Cowboy Open earlier this season. At 149 lbs., Zach Martinez placed 4th. Martinez won his first match via decision 7-0, and dropped his next sending him into the consolation bracket. On the backside Martinez won matches by the score of 7-3, 8-4 and one match by forfeit, before falling in the consolation finals by fall in 2:36 to Robert Walker of Air Force. Martinez is 11-8 on the season, and this was the first tournament he has placed at this year.
