Eaton gives Valley a run for its money in the Regional Wrestling Roundup

Eaton — Rapidly improving Eaton was in a virtual tie in the team race heading into the finals Saturday, but the three-time defending Class 3A champion Valley Vikings made all the right moves late, winning the Northern Region title with 222.5 points. The host Reds were second with 200 points. Weld Central was fifth with 126.5, and University was seventh out of 14 teams with 85.

Valley had nine state qualifiers, including regional champions 120-pounder Javier Gonzales (26-9), 132-pounder Brandon Damian (36-4), 145-pound Aaron Trujillo (36-3) and 170-pounder Josh Flanagan (40-4). Freshman Jaziah Whaley (39-4) was a runner-up after being pinned in 3 minutes, 28 seconds in the finals by fellow title contender Jimmy LaConte (40-2) of Weld Central. LaConte is first and Whaley is second in 3A at 152, according to the latest On the Mat statewide rankings.

Eaton had 10 state qualifiers, including 182-pound champion Jake Sandau (20-8) and runners-up 106-pounder Toby Gavette (19-11), 145-pounder Ty Garnhart (19-11), 160-pounder Braeson Lewis (31-6) and 195-pounder Braedy Sturdevant (16-3).

Weld Central had four qualifiers, including regional champions 106-pounder Santana Hernandez (34-8) and 152-pounder LaConte. University had three state qualifiers, including regional champion Emanuel Munoz Alcala (32-3), a 14-year-old freshman heavyweight. “It’s huge for him; the fact he is so young,” Bulldogs coach Easton Ramirez said. “When he steps on the mat, he doesn’t get intimidated at all by the older guys.” The three-day state tournament begins Thursday at Denver’s Pepsi Center.

Windsor charges past Greeley Central: In Frederick, Windsor will have plenty of momentum going into the state tournament next week. The Wizards had four region champions and three runners-up to walk away with the 4A Northern Region title. Windsor scored 237.5 points to top runner-up Greeley Central, which scored 215. Freshman 120-pounder Dominick Serrano (46-0) placed first, as did senior 138-pounder Chris Sandoval (41-0), senior 160-pounder Gage Trusty (28-6) and junior heavyweight Victor Bravo (24-5). The Wizards’ team score was boosted by second-place individual performances by sophomore 113-pounder Will Vombaur (23-2), senior 170-pounder Caleb Willis (36-12) and junior 195-pounder Josh Grasmick (39-12). Windsor will have 10 state qualifiers for the three-day state tournament.

Greeley Central has nine state qualifiers including regional champions 113-pounder Josh Nira (40-5), 126-pounder Andrew Alirez (45-1) and 170-pounder Andrue Rojas (37-5).

Roosevelt (7th, 100.5) had two state qualifiers, including 126-pound runner-up Bo Slaymaker (34-10).

Northridge (11th, 41) had one state qualifier.

Highland fares well at 2A Northeast regional tournament: In Sterling, Highland placed third out of 15 teams and qualified six individuals for state behind three first-place finishers. Logan Lewis, Skyler Score, and Juancito Lucero all brought home first-place finishes, with Lucero winning his finals match by Tech Fall. Cody Johnson was the lone second-place finisher for Highland at the 285-pound weight class. Dante Chiricingo and Hector Flores rounded out the Huskies state qualifiers, placing third and fourth, respectively.

Greeley West qualifies two for state tournament at 5A region 4 tournament: In Arvada, the Spartans finished eighth out of 14 and had Xavier Vasquez finish second at 182 pounds and Curtis Federico place third at 113 pounds to qualify for state.

Vasquez had a tough bracket, beating 30-6 Nathen Meyer in the semifinals before falling to 37-1 Jimmy Weaver in the finals. Federico lost his semifinal match to send him to the consolation bracket before picking up two easy victories to cruise to third place. Fabian Gallegos and Michael Gutierrez were the only other Greeley West wrestlers to place, both bringing home fifth place finishes.

Platte Valley has strong showing at 3A Central regional tournament: In Denver, the Broncos picked up two wins and four second-place finishes to propel them to a third place finish out of 15 teams. Dylan Yancey and Zach Waite both won their weight class to lead the eight Platte Valley wrestlers who qualified for state. After receiving a first round bye, Yancey won three of his next four by pinfall, including pinning Raul Lopez in 4:46 in the championship match. Waite made easy work of his bracket, picking up two major decisions and pinning his semifinal opponent in only l4 seconds. Varrion Ciddio, Adrian Rodriguez, Colton Moore and Jeremiah Land all picked up second place finishes for the Broncos. Joseph Cockroft finished third at 220 pounds and Wyatt Reisener placed fourth at 170 pounds to round out Platte Valley’’s state qualifiers.

Fort Lupton takes second at 3A Southern regional tournament: In Elizabeth, wins by Jody Sandoval II and Jacob Duran led six Fort Lupton wrestlers who qualified for state. Sandoval and Duran won six of their combined seven matches by pinfall, cruising to easy first-place finishes. Jaylen Torrez and Andrew Adame both brought home second-place finishes for the Bluedevils. After losing in the semifinals, Devon Garcia worked his way back to win the consolation bracket and finish third. At 113 pounds, Derrian Jaramillo ended up fifth, but wrestled back up to fourth to round out the Bluedevils qualifiers.
